Plywood is a well-known engineered wood that has been used for decades in a variety of industries, including DIY, construction, and furniture. This particular material is regarded as the ideal replacement for natural wood, which is an increasingly limited source. Along with the rising demand for both the quantity and quality of consumers, businesses are forced to develop high-quality panel. Follow the article below for detailed information!

Plywood: strength created by the wood plies

Plywood: strength created by the wood plies

Many people today may immediately think of particle board, MDF, OSB, etc. when you mention industrial wood. Plywood, on the other hand, is a totally distinct material that is constructed from numerous layers of thin boards that are tightly bonded. It is covered on the surface with natural wood veneer, melamine, film, or laminate layer for improved appearance and increased durability,… Using specialized glue, the proper pressure, and temperature, all of the layers of the core and surface are firmly fused together.

Composition

Surface: Panel is often finished with an additional layer of surface for better quality and aesthetics and to meet the needs of each user. There are three primary types of surfaces:

  • Melamine: A Decorative melamine glue (LPL) allows it to be water-resistant, resistant to stains, and durable.
  • Veneer: A “paper thin” cut of wood ranging from 0.3mm – 0.6mm that’s applied to both sides of a strong core.
  • Film: A layer of plastic paper with phenolic water-resistant glue enhances the strength and water resistance of sheets.

Core: Formed up of several, thin about 1.7 mm wood plies arranged in common patterns like LVD, LVL, and LVB. Any combination will generate a board with advantages that are appropriate for each use.

Adhesive: Urea Formaldehyde (UF), Melamine Urea Formaldehyde (MUF), Phenol Formaldehyde (PF)

Composition of plywood sheets

Standard dimensions

The sheets are often produced with a standard size of 1220mm x 2440mm (4ft x 8ft), it is also used for all types of engineered wood. For individual demand, there is also an oversized 1250mm x 2500mm format available.

It can be made in a variety of widths and thicknesses, ranging from 5mm to 25mm, depending on the many uses such as interior, construction projects…

The structure of Plywood

The arrangement of the wood layers identifies the three types that are currently available on the market: LVD, LVL, and LVB. Each form will be suitable and offer the best possible service in each project.

LVD – Normal structure

The most common structure is called LVD made up of thin veneer sheets that are arranged alternately one on top of the other in the perpendicular direction of the wood grain. This enables the finished board to maintain stability under pressure from multiple directions, minimize warping, and achieve balance. It is frequently used for flat furniture like beds, tables, chairs, cabinets, etc.

LVD - Normal Plywood

LVL – Laminated Veneer Lumber

LVL has wood plies layered with the same grain. It promotes excellent homogeneity, and structural stability, guarantees durability, as well as enhances the board’s bending qualities. Thanks to that, LVL is used in beam frame systems in construction projects and in some curved furniture products.

LVL - Laminated Veneer Lumber

LVB – Laminated Veneer Board

LVB stands for the core of a unique variety that is neither LVL nor LVD. However, it should be emphasized that LVB is not a term that is frequently used in the market or widely recognized in the industry. LVB’s basic structure can be modified to meet the specifications required by furniture manufacturers. Typically, the interior layers are vertical and the two outside layers are horizontal, or 3 horizontal, 2 vertical, and 3 horizontal layers. Thanks to its great mechanical hardness and excellent screw adhesion as a result, the board is perfect for use in furniture like chairs, beds, or door frames.

What is the most popular type of Plywood?

Possessing many exceptional advantages, it is considered the leading industrial wood board. This is also one of the few materials that can be utilized effectively in a range of industries, including furniture and construction. Here are a few prominent kinds of high-quality panels available today.

Melamine Plywood – Excellence in terms of both quality and looks

Melamine board with a surface covered by Melamine paper gives it a range of textures and hues to go with current interior design trends. Furniture made of melamine sheet is popular because it is simple to maintain its beauty over time. It is also well-liked for its qualities of resistance to dirt and scratches. Therefore, it is regarded as a premium material in the furniture industry.

Veneer Plywood – Engineered wood with natural beauty

Veneer faced plank has a strong core of multiple layers of wood plies and a beautiful veneer surface between 0.3mm – 0.6mm thick. Along with the unique beauty of natural wood and excellent attributes like anti-mold and high durability,… veneer-coated panels can be used in place of natural wood in many fields such as interior manufacturing, building, packaging, and CNC machining,…

Film faced plywood – The ideal construction board

In addition to the term film faced panel, this type of board is also known as coffrages or formwork. It is considered an excellent material for construction majors. The completed sheets with protective film and BWP glue offers hardness, durability, and good water resistance.

Therefore, this type can assist contractors in achieving better results while saving time and money. Besides, film-coated panels can also be applied to interiors/ exteriors such as tables, chairs, cabinets, etc. in humid environments, or as marine material, container flooring…

Formaldehyde emission standard

Formaldehyde is found in glue used in the production of engineered wood. Harmful emissions from formaldehyde contribute to poor air quality and negative impact on human health. To prevent the over-release of this toxic gas, formaldehyde emission guidelines for wood paneling in general were developed. These standards cover:

Standard Limitation of Formaldehyde Emission Applicable countries
E0/ F*** 0.07ppm Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Korea, West Asia
E1/ F** 0.14ppm
E2 0.38 ppm Southeast Asia, North Africa
Carb P1 0.18 ppm America, Canada, Europe
Carb P2 0.05 ppm

*ppm stands for parts per million
